biography

Joseph Koensgen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1984 and currently resides in East St Paul, Manitoba a few kilometers north of Winnipeg.

His artistic abilities from a very early age were recognized by his family and educators. He had opportunities to experiment with various mediums and enjoyed the different ways he could creatively express himself in each. Aside from some watercolour instruction at the age of 11 he is self-taught. He leaned towards painting with acrylics and completed his first major piece in 1999 when he was 15.

Joseph enjoys nature and spends as much time as he can outside observing and photographing wildlife. His inspiration for his paintings come from his outings and he will often paint images he has captured on film.

In addition Joseph has always admired the work of Robert Bateman and continues to draw much inspiration from his paintings.

Throughout 2009 Joseph focused more on his painting and had his first public showing at the 2009 Manitoba Art Expo in November at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg. His work was well received and he was honoured to be the winner of the People's Choice award at that show.

Joseph continues to paint passionately about what he loves, birds and animals and their natural habitats.

It is his hope that those who see his art will be reminded of nature's natural beauty and how important it is that we protect it.
